The Alzheimer’s Association has designated September 21st World Alzheimer’s Day in an effort to boost universal
awareness about Alzheimer’s and its impact on families, communities, and nations. While many World Alzheimer’s Day events were being observed globally, Peoria, IL based Petersen Health Care raised $3,900 in a campaign of support that included each of its 92 facilities across Illinois, Iowa and Missouri. Petersen Health Care owner, Mark Petersen was grateful, but not surprised by the generosity of his employees.
“We operate skilled nursing facilities, several of which specialize in Alzheimer’s/Dementia Care” Petersen said. “It’s a devastating disease that touches our lives everyday. Petersen employees are on the front line of the battle. They understand first hand that it’s everyone’s responsibility to help fund research.”
Outreach Coordinator Terri Champion, of the Alzheimer’s Association’s Central Illinois Chapter expressed gratitude on behalf of the organization. “We appreciate the efforts of Petersen Health Care to bring awareness to the effects of this devastating disease. As our population ages, we see the costs of dementia on all levels of the health and social care systems in the world and we are working to eliminate it.”
On World Alzheimer’s Day 2010, a new report was released by Alzheimer’s Disease International, highlighting the need for action in response to the growing number of people affected by Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. The report, research information, a list of upcoming events and coping tools for families, are all available online at www.alz.org
